Between 1922 and 1923 a seawall and esplanade (the Prom) were constructed along the sea front of the town (Kirkcaldy), funded by the Unemployment Grants Commission and built by unemployed residents. Recently refurbished it serves as a barrier for coastal erosion and a popular place for locals to walk and enjoy the spectacular sea views.
These images of my home town’s sea front give an insight into the life of this public space. They show the juxtaposition of the moments of peace and calm up against the busy bustle of the Links Market crowds, the leisure pursuits, moments of solitude and the power of the sea in conflict with the power of the man-made structure.
